Have you signed up for TSA Clear?

7/10/2013

Frequent travelers if you have not taken the time to sign up for TSA Clear, you really should. It is SO worth it! Many major airports including Charlotte Douglas International Airport have special lines for TSA Clear passengers.

For $100 (and going through the registration/approval process) you get the benefit of
- Designated lines which are VERY short....I've never waited more than 5 minutes
- You no longer have to remove, shoes, coat, laptop, 3 oz items, etc.

I can now get to the airport about 30 minutes later than I normally would.
NOTE: This program is airline specific. The following airlines currently DO NOT recognize the CLEAR program:

JetBlue
AirTran
Southwest

If you fly out of Charlotte as I do you are probably on US Airways most of the time and US Airways recognizes the program. I think everyone should write to the other airlines and push for them to recognize the program.

I would like to introduce you to Tega Rice! Tega's travel blog has the best
information, reviews and photographs of the Disney Cruise Line that I've seen
anywhere. For those of you who are considering a cruise you need to take a
look  at her photos (more than 500) from her cruises on the Fantasy and the
Wonder.Tega is what I would call a Disney expert since she worked
for  Walt Disney World and lives in Orlando which allows her to stay up to
date on  the latest Disney news. If you have taken a Disney Cruise I'd like
to hear your  feedback too. (P.S. she has also been to Disneyland Paris and
Disneyland in California).

Girl Trip?? My favorite travel sites for girls

3/15/2013

I can't even tell you how much fun I've had traveling with some of my girlfriends over the years. No offense to the guys but sometimes a girls trip is the best kind! These trips don't have to be expensive ladies! It could be something as simple as going to a local winery or spa for the day. Of course if you do want to max out your credit card (not recommended at all) or blow your entire tax return (wouldn't be the worst thing you ever did) then there are so many fun places to go. At the bottom of this post is a list of some of my favorite blogs/sites for travel...all focused on girls.

If you have some ideas/photos from your trips.. send themto me..I'd love to see them! As I was pulling up these pictures it struck me how many really great friends I have. I am happy to be able to travel and spend time with some of the most fun, kind, adventurous, intelligent, positive women around! Here are photos from some of my favorite trips.....in no certain order.
Picture

BEVERYLY HILLS- I've done three girls trips to Southern California..you can't go wrong with shopping in Beverly Hills, a day at Balboa Island and the beaches in Laguna.
Picture

ARIZONA- This was my second girls trip to AZ. If you and your friends love the outdoors then this is a perfect trip. Awesome hiking, beautiful resorts and golf (yes you CAN do a girls golf trip)
Picture

YOUR HOMETOWN - Why not have your friends come to your home town for a trip.....then everyone can stay with you for free......plan the trip around a sporting event or a concert....here we are at the Lady Gaga Concert in Charlotte...FUN weekend!
Picture

CHARLESTON, SC- I highly recommend planning a trip around a fashion show.......Charleston Fashion Week is a perfect one. So many things to do and see in this city. Great food too! Try SNOB (slightly north of Broad)
Picture

LONDON- I had no idea that two girls could have so much fun in a city. London was such a great spot for a girls trip....shopping in Nottinghill, drinks at cool bars like the one owned by Guy Ritchie (Punchbowl), Afternoon Tea, museums........what more do you want?
Picture
DISNEYLAND- You are never too old for Disneyland! If you have never been to a theme park without your kids .....try it, especially if you love roller coasters and food. My cousin and I loved the Blue Bayou Restaurant! There are obviously so many other things you can do on your trip to Southern California too.
Picture
A LOCAL WINERY- It is very likely that the area you live in has a winery or two. My friends and I loved touring and hanging out at Daveste Vineyards...a winery about 20 miles from where we live. You don't have to do an overnight trip to enjoy yourself and get away.
Picture
ALASKA- If you are a little more adventurous head to Alaska!! We combined our trip with a race, The Mayor's Half Marathon in Anchorage. Alaska is so beautiful. We actually saw a lot in three days but I would recommend a longer trip if you have time. Do take time to go to Denali National Park to see Denali, the tallest peak in North America.
Picture
NEW YORK CITY - I've been on three trips to NYC with three different girls. We ALL had a great time. NYC has something for everyone. Here we are in Brooklyn. There are so many things to do....Central Park.......shopping
.........nightlife.......Broadway......museums.........I could go on and on.
Picture
A LOCAL SPA- Another idea if you want to stay close to home...find a local spa/resort and spend an afternoon or a full day. Many times you can buy one service (massage, etc.) and then spend the day in the spa. Me and some of my best friends/neighbors went to the Rock Barn spa about 50 miles from our house in NC and had a fantastic day...massages, lunch, champagne, hot tubs.......we didn't want to come home!
Picture

A RACE- Especially a race at Walt Disney World......this is one of my most memorable trips.....running the WDW Half Marathon with my cousin and sister! What an experience to have them with me crossing the finish line!
Picture

CALIFORNIA-This is another one of my favorite trips .....with my girl friend
who loves photography like I do. We spent four days hanging out in the
Laguna/New Port Beach area....site seeing, eating, drinking and taking lots of photos for our blogs! Crystal Cove was one of our favorite beaches.
Picture

MYRTLE BEACH- If you live in the South Eastern U.S. Myrtle Beach is a good destination, especially for a race. It is within driving distance of many of my friends in the south so it is a good meeting spot. The Diva Half Marathon was a great choice for a race.......IF you like pink and want a FLAT course.
Picture

BOSTON- Are you and your friends into sports, food or history? Go to Boston!
Me, my two sisters and my cousin had an awesome time on our girls trip. Love
Boston!
Picture
SHEROX TRIATHLON SERIES- For the ladies who would like to do a sprint triathlon I suggest the SheRox series. I've done two of them..Miami and Phoenix and they are a blast. Here is me and one of my best friends at the Expo for the Phoenix event a couple of years ago. I was SO proud of us both but especially her for completing her first race of this kind!
Picture
ASHEVILLE, NC- Love hiking, wine, spas, golf, food or all of it? You should
experience the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC. You can see one of the most incredible views of the Appalachian Mountains from their outdoor dining area and they just might have the nicest spa I've ever been to.
Picture
BROADWAY MUSICAL- Broadway musicals and plays are a great girls outing. Of course it is fun to see them in NYC or a major city but you possibly do this in your own town. Me and three of my friends had a fun night out going to dinner and then seeing Legally Blonde in Charlotte. Great excuse to get dressed up!
Picture

NEW YORK CITY - If you go with your friends to NYC you must go to Magnolia Bakery, The Soho Grand Hotel and to see the musical Chicago. I also went to a Yankees game and will never forget it!
This is a list of travel sites focused on women.........you might find them helpful in getting ideas for your next trip

It is o.k. to lose my mind in California...it is only temporary

The only time I've ever cried on my way home from a trip was the first time I flew back home from California. I've always been an east coast girl but there is something about California that gets me every time. I felt silly to say the least, crying on a plane but I am happy to find out that it is Ok........................................
perfectly normal, according to the editor of the 2012 Travel Guide To California. He says many people temporarily lose their minds when they come to CA. I noticed Laguna Beach made the cover of the 2012 Travel Guide. Laguna so far is my favorite spot in CA but I've never been to the wine country, Monterey, Big Sur or Santa Cruz. That will all be in this trip. I'll let you know if Laguna is still my favorite after my adventures this week.

Two blondes attempt yoga poses in front of Bonsecours Market in Montreal

Christie, my personal Montreal tour guide, took me to Bonsecours Market. She was THE BEST! Christie lived in Montreal for several years and invited me to see the city with her and her boyfriend Julien! They were such great hosts and definitely knew how to find their way around this city. However, Montreal has a great Metro system so if you go without the assistance of "locals" you will be just fine. It is easy to navigate!

I was fascinated by the architecture and unique collection of shops at Bonsecurs Market. It is a two story public market located in the Old Port area of Montreal which opened in 1949 and was named for the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel just next door. The Montreal City Hall was located here in the 1800’s. You can get a great view of the market from the ice skating rink in Old Port.
I found some very interesting clothing that reminded me of the ones that I buy locally in North Carolina designed by my friend Devon (Jelbel Designs). CUTE!

After shopping we were apparently in the mood for Yoga so we attempted some poses on a snow mound. Well..... Chrisite actually did the poses...I made an attempt. I think I get an "A" for effort. :)

Toronto Maple Leafs

If you find yourself in Toronto you should definitely go to a Maple Leafs Hockey game. It is a great experience even if you are not a major hockey fan. As soon as you step in to the Air Canada Centre, home of the Maple Leafs, you can feel the passion for the sport. I was recently in Toronto for business and got an opportunity to go to the game and I'm so glad I did. The Air Canada Centre is impressive and is easily accessible in downtown Toronto.

Ticket prices range of course. Even the most inexpensive seats are good. I got a chance to go down to the ice and take some pictures.........great view!

It features a 3,000 bottle floor to ceiling 'Sterling Three Palms' wine cellar that surrounds a marble tasting table. Very, very cool. Opposite the wine cellar, the Rothschild Room is surrounded by glass for a more exclusive and intimate atmosphere. Both of these unique dining experiences can be booked through the Club Manager.

Love, love, love the incredible "platinum" service! Thanks ladies for showing me around! Also - thanks to a certain bartender who chose to remain nameless. The Maple Leafs Platinum Club

Belize and Caye Caulker

When my friends came back from Belize I was so impressed with their photos. Jeanette was kind enough to share her blog about their trip with me. Maybe this will give you an idea for a new vacation spot!

Our second port was Belize City, Belize. When we got there we walked out of the port area and purchase 4 tickets via the Caye Caulker Water Taxi to the beautiful little island of Caye Caulker. The ride took about 40 minutes! This charming little island is what you would expect to see in a travel magazine! There are no cars on the island. People get around by way of golf carts and bicycles.
The colorful hotels and outfitters lined the sandy streets. Small boats sat tied to the end of long docks. Palm trees and coconuts lined the shoreline with the crystal clear water glistening behind them. Ahhhh, heaven!

We didn't have reservations for an excursion, but as soon as we got off of the taxi we found Star Tours where we booked a tour going to Shark Ray Alley. This turned out to be one of our favorite experiences ever and we are already planning a trip back there to stay a bit longer! The tour consisted of 3 stops: Shark Ray Alley, The Barrier Reef, and Coral Gardens.

We got in the little boat and drove for about 5 minutes before we were at our first stop, Shark Ray Alley. Sting rays and nurse sharks started swimming toward the boat. We talked to the girls about what it would be like to swim with rays and sharks, but I must admit that the sight of them swarming us was a little intimidating. Jillian, on the other had, was so excited that she put on her mask and snorkel and jumped right in the water. She is a brave little one! Chloe was right behind her. I was still on the boat and not a second later our awesome guide, Shawn, had a 4 ft. nurse shark in his arms! Spencer was brave and held him and then finally talked me into doing the same! The girls couldn't stop talking about how rough he felt. They thought a shark would feel something like a dolphin or sting ray! We let him go and went on swimming with tons of sting rays and fish and even saw a barracuda!
Our second stop was a guided Barrier Reef tour. Here Shawn told us that he would lead and we would follow. We swam out for about 30 minutes while he pointed out all the different species of fish and coral. Right before we were ready to head back to the boat we were at a depth of about 30 feet! It was amazing. Shawn said he had something to show us and to pay attention. We all looked closely as he basically called an eel out from the coral and then fed it! It must have been 4 feet long!
Later the girls went on to talk about feeling like they were swimming in an aquarium!
Picture
Our final stop of the day was the Coral Gardens where we got to swim around on our own. It wasn't nearly as deep or filled with wild marine life, but the coral was quite beautiful!
Picture

If you go to Caye Caulker I highly recommend Star Tours. Shawn was so informative about the reef and the marine life.
